American Superconductor presents Distribution Static VAR Compensator (D-SVC) System

As our grasp of advanced technology continues to grow, the demand for sustainable clean energy grows as well. Our devices and equipment demand even more energy which in turn requires higher costs. So how do we continue to provide optimum power distribution and transmission? American Superconductor has an answer with their Distribution Static VAR Compensator (D-SVC) System.

a7 As noted by their electrical engineers Manisha Ghorai, John A. Diaz de Leon II and Kerry N. Diehl in an IEEE study, “Although SVCs have traditionally been viewed as devices for transmission applications only; new advances [in] technology allow SVC applications at distribution levels with minimal equipment and at a low cost”.

The D-SVC System was designed to mitigate power quality problems associated with large loads on the distribution grid. Chief issues the system addresses include ending flicker and eliminating voltage sags with enhancing power quality. Looking for fast and accurate VAR compensation connected directly at the distribution level (15kV class without a transformer), then this will certainly interest your company.

On top of those benefits, the system reduces start-up disturbances, lowers maintenance costs and extends the life of equipment. There is no external cooling so it works on a simple “set and forget” operation.

For example, motor starting is significantly impacted when D-SVC systems are in use.

Sawmills, rock crushers, quarrying and mining operations, water and wastewater pump stations: These operations are frequently located on long and weak distribution feeders. Applying the D-SVC system eliminates or defers the need for circuit upgrades and can be moved when the need no longer exists.

Large motors at car shredders, car crushers, natural gas pipelines and chemical processes (typ. 2-14,000 HP)

An alternative to installing a seven figure transmission line upgrade, the D-SVC system can reduce overall project time by months.

The D-SVC system can be used instead of transmission upgrades or can eliminate the use of a traditional static VAR compensator creating a minimum capital savings of greater than 65% and a time savings of months or years.
