Tips On Maximizing The Life of UPS Batteries

Your UPS battery is a critical component of any data center or computer hub. An uninterruptible power supply drastically reduces the risk of complications during loss of power. However, don’t allow the term “uninterruptible” give you a false sense of security. These sealed batteries (typically BRLA) typically last between 3 and 5 years and need to be checked to ensure they reach their lifespan. There are a few things you can do to help maximize the life of your UPS batteries and mitigate any unexpected issues.

Ventilation Affects Temperature

The placement of your UPS is one of the first things to consider when trying to maximize its battery life. The optimal environment for a UPS is in a temperature-controlled room, away from windows or anything that creates moisture. Ventilation openings are placed on the sides, front and back of units so make sure these are not blocked or obstructed. Dust in the system can also affect the performance of any UPS unit.

Poor ventilation and dust can raise the temperature of a unit past its normal operating point. This is critical to keep in mind as this can damage the system and its long-term viability. Know what the best temperature is for your system and then monitor it on a regular basis.

Maintenance and Discharge Cycle

A UPS system switches to battery automatically when the power is lost. Once power is restored, the UPS begins to recharge itself and prepare for its next cycle. Frequent discharge cycles deplete battery reserves faster and decrease the life of the unit. Some UPS units automatically allow regulation of voltage sags and other abnormal factors.

Always ensure your unit is as clean and dust-free as possible. Regular visual inspections can help keep your unit operating for the duration of its life. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to alert the proper people and have it looked it immediately. If possible, keep backup batteries on hand in the event of extenuating circumstances.
